New Website

I’m in the process of developing a new website for Jamie Willmott Photography, which is why the current blog hasn’t been updated recently.

When the new site goes live, I will be transferring the existing blog articles to my new blog.

Keep watching this space!

Image featured in Digital Photographer Issue 87

I was fortunate enough to have another one of my images selected for a feature in Digital Photographer Magazine (Issue 87, page 58). The subject of this shot is actually the brother of the little girl in my previously featured image!

Again, this shot was taken whilst playing their garden. He was pushing a small trolley as he toddled around. To get a reaction, I stopped the trolley with my foot which caused him look up towards me - click!

    Canon IXUS 100

We picked up a Canon IXUS 100 a couple of weeks ago (typically, Canon have just announced the IXUS 120!).

Becky was after a small compact camera that was easy to use, produced decent images and was small enough to keep in her bag. We had a friend’s wedding coming up so decided to make the plunge and get one. After a bit of research we settled on this little Canon compact.

Little is the appropriate word because this camera is tiny, not much bigger than a pack of playing cards. Despite the small size, the controls on the camera are large enough to use easily and the 2.5″ screen is sufficient. The camera does have an optical viewfinder, but the LCD will be used for this 99% of the time.

The camera has an all metal body and feels very solid. The rounded off corners give the camera a good feel in the hand. It is advisable to get a small case for it because the metal finish can scuff in a bag with keys and other objects.

  • Another image in Digital Photographer

    Pretty girl with flower

A bit behind the times with this post, but I had another image featured in Digital Photographer Magazine. It appears in issue 85 (issue 86 is out now) on page 39 to illustrate an article on outdoor portraits.

The shot is the one on the left, that I took for a friend who wanted some shots of their daughter.

I used the 70-200mm lens so I could keep some distance while we got her to play in the garden. She soon forgot about the presence of the camera, allowing me to get some nice candid shots. This one was my favourite from the day.

  • Taking Just One Lens

We went for a drive to Llanrwst in North Wales, recently. It’s a small town near to Betws-y-Coed, on the edges of the Snowdonia National Park. The River Clywd runs through the town, which was our main destination. It was a hot and sunny afternoon, so we thought that a bit of relaxing by the river would be a welcome way to spend some time.

I took the camera along with me but, since it was hot (and I didn’t intend to spend the time looking for pictures) I decided to just take my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens, since it is the smallest and lightest of the lenses I own. It can be an interesting challenge to restrict yourself to a single, fixed focus lens, when out and about with the camera.
