A Bumper Crop Of Project 365

Since I was suffering from the lurgy last week, there wasn’t a Project 365 update. To make up for that, here is a two for one special edition that will go through the images of the past two weeks…

On the Easter bank holiday Monday, since the weather was nice, we went to New Brighton for a walk along the prom and also to visit the old fort. Perch Rock Fort is currently being renovated as a museum and already has a number of exhibitions on show, mostly from the second world war. From the top of the fort you also get a good view of New Brighton Lighthouse. I took a number of photos on our way round, but this one of the lighthouse was my favourite of the day. The sun was starting to get lower in the sky and was coming in at a good angle to define some shape on the lighthouse.

On the Tuesday I had to go into Liverpool City Centre for an opticians appointment. I took my camera with me to grab this image that I had noticed the last time I had been in the area. As part of the Liverpool One project a new Costa Coffee has opened near to my opticians. On the upper floor of the new building is a series of coloured pipes that wrap around one side of the building. The pipes have gaps between them but I wanted the effect of just seeing coloured stripes. I used my 70-200mm lens to isolate a series of stripes that had a good mix of colours and shot it from a narrow angle to hide the gaps. Shooting from the angle also has the effect of making the stripes appear narrower as you go across the image.

Great Scott! More Project 365

It’s this weeks round up of Project 365 images…

I was in Southport on Monday. Becky was getting her hair done so I thought I would grab a few pictures around the Pier and the lake. Unfortunately the weather was really poor so I couldn’t get the shots I was after. I did manage to grab a couple of windswept pictures (such as the one below) but my favourite from the day was this one, taken when I got back to the salon. I liked the contrasts between the different coloured towels and the white of the shelving.

Hey! Look! It’s More Project 365

Time for another round-up of a week’s Project 365 images…

30th March 09

30th Mar 09

I started off the week with this stylised image of a tree that lives outside the offices I worked at. I had been meaning to get an image of it for a while and, since it was my penultimate day at work, I thought I better grab a shot.

I liked the contrast of the green tree against the red tones of the wood on the wall behind it. The tones are quite muted in real life, which is one reason I went for the high contrast and saturation in the image. I wanted to really bring out the contrast in the colours. The tree is permanently in shade so I threw a bit of flash light on it to vary the brightness a bit. The vertical panoramic format lent itself to the shape of the tree. I like images to be cropped in tight on the main subject, in the normal 3:2 format there was too much background. This format still shows enough of it to get the contrasting colours across the view. I nicknamed the tree, The Poodle Tree, because the topiary.

Tuesday was my final day at Sony Ericsson, so I wanted to use an image that marked the occasion. This sign lives in the main reception area for the Sony Ericsson offices. I liked the choice of colour for the fall that the sign is mounted on, the red contrasts well with the green of the logo.

You can see some of the offices reflecting in the sign. I did think about trying to eliminate the reflections when taking the shot but time was tight and I think it gives the location some context. I did have to shoot the sign from slightly below so that I didn’t appear as one of the reflections. Because of that, I had to correct the perspective of the shot afterwards to keep the sign straight.

The Hot Shoe Diaries (Joe McNally)

The Hot Shoe Diaries (Joe McNally)

The Hot Shoe Diaries (Joe McNally)

Joe McNally is a very experienced and internationally acclaimed American photographer who has shot covers for National Geographic and Sports Illustrated, as well being a staff photographer for Life magazine. He is also known for his photography workshops and a number of tutorial videos for Nikon and the Scott Kelby’s Training site.

This is his second book after, “The Moment It Clicks” (see my review of that book here.)

The Hot Shoe Diaries aims to educate the reader about practical applications of small, dedicated flash units to produce the types of images that are normally created with large studio strobes. Whilst the first book was mainly concerned with the story behind the images, this book goes into a lot more detail on how the actual images are created.

Joe takes us through the thought process involved in deciding how to light the images, often including mistakes that were made and lessons learned. There is also detailed information on the camera settings that were used and tips on shooting images in similar conditions or environments.
