Project 365

A Few Changes

I’ve decided to stop doing my Project 365. With taking an image every day, I have found that some days I have just been pressing the shutter at a subject in order to have some sort of entry for that day. Because of this, I have not been happy with the quality of a number of the entries, which is not a direction that I want my photography to be heading in. When I make an image of something, I want it to be because something motivated me to capture it and not because I felt that I had to.

Over the next few weeks I will be doing some reorganisation of the gallery section of the site. The existing Project 365 gallery will be removed, but a number of the images will still appear under different galleries.  I’m currently thinking about the best way to reorganise it so that I can showcase a variety of images without it getting too cluttered and awkward to navigate.

As well as the reorganisation, I am planning to add a mechanism for visitors/clients to buy prints and products direct from the gallery.

The blog will now detail new additions to the galleries as well as the occasional behind the scenes look at the setup or stories behind particular images. If there are any images that you would like some more info on, feel free to let me know. I’ll still be doing the odd review or tutorial too.

Apologies to those who have been following the Project 365 images, but I hope you continue to check out the site for new images appearing on the gallery.

The current issue of Digital Photographer (issue 83, on sale now) has featured a couple of my Project 365 images in one of their articles. Each month they do a tips section with 20 tips based on a specific theme, this month’s theme being creative imagery. My image of a black vase surrounded by light trails illustrates a tip on painting with light (tip 3) and my image of a trapped figure is accompanied by a description of how I achieved that shot (tip 17). The image of the vase was also used on the magazine’s contents page to illustrate the article.

The featured images are shown below. Click on the image to go to the corresponding Project 365 entry.

Project 365 - Behind The Scenes

To accompany the Project 365 gallery, I have been posting regular(ish) roundups which go into some more detail about the shots for that week. For a number of the images, the detail is mostly a reiteration of the image description that appears in the gallery.

Because of this, I am going to replace the Project 365 roundup with a new series of Behind The Scenes posts. These will cover a single Project 365 image and will detail the thought processes, setup or story behind that image. Unlike the roundup, only images that warrant the extra coverage will appear in a Behind The Scenes post.

I will be featuring old Project 365 images (from before I started the roundup) as well as the more recent ones, but I am open to suggestions for which images are featured. If there is a particular Project 365 image that you would like to see getting a Behind The Scenes treatment then drop me an email or stick it in a comment on this post. If you specify the date that the image appears and any particular info that you would like included, then I will do my best to cover it.

A Bumper Crop Of Project 365

Since I was suffering from the lurgy last week, there wasn’t a Project 365 update. To make up for that, here is a two for one special edition that will go through the images of the past two weeks…

On the Easter bank holiday Monday, since the weather was nice, we went to New Brighton for a walk along the prom and also to visit the old fort. Perch Rock Fort is currently being renovated as a museum and already has a number of exhibitions on show, mostly from the second world war. From the top of the fort you also get a good view of New Brighton Lighthouse. I took a number of photos on our way round, but this one of the lighthouse was my favourite of the day. The sun was starting to get lower in the sky and was coming in at a good angle to define some shape on the lighthouse.

On the Tuesday I had to go into Liverpool City Centre for an opticians appointment. I took my camera with me to grab this image that I had noticed the last time I had been in the area. As part of the Liverpool One project a new Costa Coffee has opened near to my opticians. On the upper floor of the new building is a series of coloured pipes that wrap around one side of the building. The pipes have gaps between them but I wanted the effect of just seeing coloured stripes. I used my 70-200mm lens to isolate a series of stripes that had a good mix of colours and shot it from a narrow angle to hide the gaps. Shooting from the angle also has the effect of making the stripes appear narrower as you go across the image.

Great Scott! More Project 365

It’s this weeks round up of Project 365 images…

I was in Southport on Monday. Becky was getting her hair done so I thought I would grab a few pictures around the Pier and the lake. Unfortunately the weather was really poor so I couldn’t get the shots I was after. I did manage to grab a couple of windswept pictures (such as the one below) but my favourite from the day was this one, taken when I got back to the salon. I liked the contrasts between the different coloured towels and the white of the shelving.
